St. John the Baptist has feast days throughout the Church Calendar
Aside from the Lord and the Blessed Virgin Mary, no other saint is honored as frequently in the Church Calendar as St. John the Baptist.
There are a variety of reasons for this. He is the prophesied 'messenger' (“Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me..." Malachi 3:1) of the Lord. And, the Lord Jesus himself honors John with these words: "Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist... Matthew 11:11).
The Church honors St. John with six Feasts...
The Conception
The Nativity/Birth
The Synaxis
The Beheading
First & Second Finding of his head
Third Finding of his head
Each feast highlights a different and significant eveny in his life. To get a fuller picture before next week's commemoration of the Beheading on August 28, take a journey through the life of the Baptist through the links above.
